Weed Control in Lucerne
The winter dormancy period for Lucerne is before the onset of spring growth, providing the opportunity to apply Gramoxone on stands not less than 6 months old, or on stands not less than one year old with the addition of a residual herbicide such as Atrazine. These herbicides are cost effective and control a wide range of weeds, so it is best to make use of this opportunity. The following are some points to bear in mind when applying Gramoxone, or Gramoxone/Atrazine:
The Lucerne should be hard grazed or close cut before applying the chemical to expose weeds as well as to remove the leaf area of the Lucerne, to prevent damage to the Lucerne. Allow the weeds to freshen up for about 10 – 14 days before applying the herbicide. Ensure total coverage of the weeds. The active ingredient of Gramoxone is inactivated by mud or dirt, so ensure that the leaf area of the weeds are clean at the time of application. For the same reason, use only clean water in the spray mix. Ideally, Gramoxone should be applied in the evening or in cloudy conditions to allow time for uptake of the chemical. Sunny conditions following the application would assist in activating the chemical. It is important to always read the label on any chemical used, to follow the instructions and take note of and comply with the information on the label. Steve Lawson is the ATS Field Rep.
